Ordance Survey

Each year, Ordnance Survey provides the opportunity for Year 7 pupils to receive a high quality 1:25,000 Explorer map of their home area free of charge.

The Dyke House School Geography department was keen to allow our pupils to take up this offer when we ordered a copy of the Middlesbrough and Hartlepool Explorer map for every pupil in Year 7. Little did we know that this year it was to be one of Dyke House School’s pupils who would receive the 5 millionth map given away nationally by Ordnance Survey.

To celebrate this, Ordnance Survey are arranging a fun treasure hunt activity in the school grounds for a group of lucky Y7s on Thursday 2nd October. We are told a number of very important guests along with the press will be in attendance to witness the fun. More details after the event! Watch this space!

5 millionth free map update

Well done to everyone in 7uGe1 who did the school proud on Thursday. We had the Director General of the Ordnance Survey here to present us with a special unique gold 5 millionth map and she was totally impressed with all the kids, what they said and did and how they got really 'stuck in' to the challenge! Iain Wright MP, the Minister for the Ordnance Survey was there too. The treasure hunt worked well, even if a couple of the lads seemed a bit miffed that they were missing their PE lesson. The TV was there and did quite a bit of filming, though sadly it only made the late lunch time news! (when none of us were around to see it!)
Anyway, thanks to everyone involved in making last Thursday morning a success!!!

Just had a phone call from a lady who saw the article about the Ordnance Survey visit to Dyke House School in last Thursday's Hartlepool Mail. Apparently, her son (an ex pupil of Dyke House, but now a professional photographer living in the Caribbean) had taken the original photo for the cover of the 1:25,000 map (a picture of the beach at Seaton Carew) and she wanted to send him a copy. We were glad to oblige!
So now a Middlesbrough and Hartlepool map is winging its way to the Caribbean. Bet there aren't many other Middlesbrough and Hartlepool maps there!... and you never know, to people living in the Caribbean, a picture of the beach at Seaton Carew may look exotic!?!?!
