Year 10 Go MADD!Make a Difference Day (or MADD for short)… Dyke House School has been doing this major Citizenship event for many years now and it has become an annual fixture when on one day in October, Year 10 pupils really do have the chance to ‘make a difference’ by volunteering to work in the community.
This year, October 22nd saw at least 200 pupils going out in groups into the community to help to improve things in possibly small but also important ways. Projects ranged from helping out in care homes and charity shops and assisting with riding for the disabled through to carrying out environmental improvements at Summerhill, the North Cemetery and at Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park. Several groups were accompanied by members of the Year 10 tutor team, though they were not there to just to supervise, they had to get ‘stuck in’ as well! I know that at the start of the day several pupils felt a little unsure about having to step outside their comfort zone, working in unfamiliar surroundings often with people they did not know well though any concerns were quickly dispelled as the groups bonded and worked together. Feedback from the pupils, their tutors and adults they were working alongside has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks must go to Mrs Sheldrick who arranged all the placements and co-ordinated the day and to the many and varied organisations who were willing to let our pupils contribute towards making that difference.
