The Art and Design Department

All pupils have equal access to our art and design curriculum. Pupils benefit from an enthusiastic, experienced and committed team. Many pupils enjoy, appreciate and take full advantage of our study support opportunities.The department offers pupils the experience of working within two and three dimensions, set within a critical studies context.

We have developed many links with the wider community such as the Hartlepool College of Art, The Hartlepool Museum Service and other secondary schools. Exhibits of work by pupils are displayed throughout the school and beyond. Our courses offer all pupils the opportunity for personal development of expression of ideas. Pupils enjoy great success at GCSE Art and Design and many pupils successfully gain places at Art College.

The aims of the department are;

  • To create an environment that will allow pupils to experience and interact with all elements of art and design.
  • To develop pupils aesthetic awareness and the ability to make individual aesthetic judgements.
  • To develop an awareness of other cultures.
  • To develop perceptual skills through art and design.
  • To develop skills with a wide range of materials.

develop ideas and research information for independent work

In Art and Design in Key Stage 3 pupils are taught how to explore and develop ideas through drawing and observation, how to develop ideas and research information for independent work. Pupils organise and present work in different ways, including using a sketchbook. They use a wide range of materials including computer aided design and all art projects are linked to the study of artists and craftspeople. They learn how to evaluate their own and others’ work, express opinions and to adapt and refine their work.

All pupils have the opportunity to work in at least three different project areas

At Key stage 4 Art and Design is for pupils of all abilities who enjoy working with a wide variety of materials. All pupils have the opportunity to work in at least three different project areas for example: Drawing/Painting, Graphics, Printmaking, Fashion, Model Making (3-D design). Depending upon the strengths of the individual, pupils may be entered for one of two Art and Design examinations. All pupils are encouraged to develop their own ideas through using the widest range of art materials. Project work is developed through looking at the work of Artists and Designers past and present.

Our Art and Design Primary Liaison Teacher works regularly in our partner primary schools on negotiated projects. These schools also have the opportunity to work in our own art and design studios. We enjoy successful links with our local Art and Design College and pupils have access to work at the college on link projects.

The department offers weekly evening and lunch Art clubs to all pupils

The department has a wide range of facilities and teaches the subject in two specialist Art and Design studios and a Music/Art and Design studio. We also enjoy ready access to purpose-built state of the art computer workstations and access other ICT facilities through our link with the local City Learning Centre.

The department offers weekly evening and lunch Art clubs to all pupils including GAT (Gifted and Talented) pupils who wish to take advantage of extra individual help and to those who wish to make use of the Art and Design Department facilities.
