The Physical Education (PE) Department The PE department promotes the learning of all abilities through the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of a pupil. The lessons promote pupil growth, physical skills, self-confidence and self-worth through PE enrichment. The staff strive to develop pupils’ physical competence and confidence across a wide range of activities and bring with them enthusiasm, high expectations of all pupils and a dedication to learning.
The aims of the department are;
• to maximise participation
• to make PE enjoyable
• to develop the ability of all pupils
• to broaden pupils awareness of physical activity and opportunities
• to promote a healthy lifestyle
The department offers a wide range of activities, featuring both team games and individual activities. Throughout Key Stage 3, emphasis is placed on skill learning and knowledge of the activity. Although pupils will also gain experience in the playing of games during lessons, PE is planned to be both enjoyable and inclusive for them.
In Key Stage 4 PE is offered as an Option for pupils to study to GCSE or BTEC Level. These courses are divided into practical and theory lessons. Practical lessons provide an opportunity for pupils to consolidate skills, previously learned at Key Stage 3, applying them to game situations. They will also learn to analyse performance within an activity. Theory lessons cover issues in PE from the Human Anatomy to the Olympic Games. An analytical study is also completed allowing the pupils to become ‘coaches’ which includes planning and teaching some lessons to their peers and evaluating the performance of others.
The department offers excellent facilities to be used in both practical and theory lessons. This comprises of a multi-purpose sports hall, a gymnasium, a 22metre swimming pool, “Astro turf” all-weather area, grass football pitch and a dedicated ICT suite. The department has also invested heavily in time creating a piece of computer software to help with the study of the theory of PE which is now being used across the country!
A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered including football, rugby, basketball, hockey, netball, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, trampolining, rounders, athletics, cricket, fitness and dance.
