Dyke House School recognises that all children are different and that they develop at different rates. To try to meet the demands of such an comprehensive population the school has developed a number of strategies and policies, one of which is the Gifted and Talented policy. This highlights the methods of identification, monitoring and evaluation of the most able cohort as well as the rationale behind the choice of method. Registers are set up for each year group consisting of the top 10% (7% academic and 3% talent). There is a shadow group of approximately 10% (making the total 20%), which highlights pupils with subject specific strengths. During lessons work is differentiated with enrichment and extension materials as well as varying the methods of teaching to meet the learning styles of the pupils. Pupil learning is monitored throughout the school on a regular basis. Those on the GAT register are also monitored by the GAT assistant who helps identify individual targets. These targets are then written into a GAT IEP (Individual Education Plan). Parents are extremely important in the learning experience of pupils. To recognise this the school has developed a Parents Support Group made up of parents of pupils on the register. These parents are actively involved in supporting other parents (and pupils) at various times in the school year by using their own area of strength to enhance the skills and experiences of the young people. At present there are 25 pupils who are members of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth.
