Newspaper day
Each year, 250 primary pupils spend a day in Dyke House School producing a newspaper called “Primary Power”. They are supported by their own teachers from their own school as well as our own teachers and pupils from Dyke House School.
SportsDyke House School encourages all pupils to take part in sports both Physical Education lessons and in the extensive extra-curricular activities offered to encourage and maximise their potential.
We play soccer, rugby, basketball, hockey, netball as well as cricket, tennis and volleyball. These games encourage pupils to understand team play, operation, competition and a sense of achievement. Each year group has the opportunity to represent the school as well as participate in clubs after school.
The school and its wider community extensively use our sports facilities. These facilities are available during the evening, weekends and school holidays. Currently we have two male and four female fully qualified teachers of Physical education and these are joined by six other staff with specific games qualifications. Other specialist coaches are used in our programme as well as the local Caledonian Hockey Club and Hartlepool United Football Club. Our swimming instructor ensures that there are strong links with Hartlepool Swimming Club which uses our pool daily.
Make A Difference DayStaff and pupils participate in the annual ‘Make a Difference Day’ where all Year 10 pupils and staff volunteer their services to the community in a wide variety of projects such as: Gardening with the Age Concern, Park and Beach Conservation, Horse Riding with the Disabled. In October 2008 we had over 200 pupils supervised by 20 of our own staff and over 40 organisations taking part in the 2-day event.
Teaching timePupils are taught in sets from two half-year groups to cater for the individual needs of pupils. There is a degree of flexibility in these groups. Our Curriculum Support Team will assist departments and subject teachers in teaching pupils with special educational needs and pupils identified as “Gifted & Talented”, as well as ensuring all pupils have equal access to the curriculum and resources.
